Doctoral Fellowships

BIGSEM students are typically funded during their doctoral studies through different channels. Some students are employed by a chair at the Faculty of Business Administration and Econmics or at the Center for Mathematical Economics. Furthermore, depending on the current projects there might be fellowships funded by third parties available through BiGSEM as well. And finally, there are a number of third party fellowships doctoral students can apply for directly at the funding institution.
The application period for funding depends on the source of financing.

Research Assistant Positions

Graduate students can cover their living expenses by working as teaching or research assistants. These positions can be awarded for up to six years. Open jobs are advertised through various channels. On the Bielefeld University webpage for job postings openings are published here. Further information is usually also given by the chair to which the position is assigned to.

Bielefeld Young Researchers' Fund

Twice a year, the Rectorate of Bielefeld University grants financial awards from the  Bielefeld Young Researchers' Fund in order to support the work of young, highly qualified academics. Students preparing for their doctoral phase and doctoral students in their final phase can apply for the funding lines Career Bridge Master - Doctorate or Doctorate Completion Scholarship.

Third party scholarships

There exist a number of foundations which support outstanding qualified doctoral students through a scholarship.
The database of the Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides a good overview of potential funding organizations. In addition to that, there are several different foundations which are supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research that offer financial support for doctoral students.

The DAAD database

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest funding organization in the world supporting the international exchange of students and scholars. On its website the DAAD offers an easy to handle and well-arranged database. This DAAD database provides the user with information about many current scholarships offered by different (and not only DAAD supported) organizations. Another advantage of the DAAD database is that the applicants can directly search for offers proposed for their country.

Funding Organizations

Listed below are foundations which offer scholarships for highly motivated doctoral students. Additional funding sources are provided at the PhD funding webpage of the Verein für Socialpolitik.  The list includes some foundations with a political or a religious background. All are supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The following basic rules apply to all of these foundations: The scholarships are open to graduated German students as well as to young graduate students from abroad who are admitted to a doctoral program at a German university. Funding is usually awarded for two years. Applications for these scholarships go through the respective organizations directly.
