Since its foundation, BiGSEM is always supported by the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics and by the Center for Mathematical Economics to sustain its excellent highly international oriented Graduate School. Both institutions provide infrastructure, every year a limited number of  Doctoral fellowships are financed by the Faculty, annual events are supported by both.

In addition to this basic support, BiGSEM has received substantial external funding from third parties to support early stage researchers from German and European institutions like the German Science Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as well as the European Commission in the framework of FP7 and Horizon 2020. Through highly competitive formats, like an International Research Training Groups (DFG) or an Erasmus Mundus Doctoral Program (European Commission), funding for doctoral fellowships, participation and presentation at conferences, short research stays abroad as well as for the infrastructure of the BiGSEM could be acquired. BiGSEM as an institution continuously engages in grant applications of this type and also encourages students to actively seek additional support for research activities during their dissertation project from suitable funding institutions.

Furthermore, the interdiciplinarity of BiGSEM is reflected by the various projects of other faculties of the Bielefeld University it is cooperating with.
