Application BiGSEM

Application BiGSEM

The Ph.D. Programme in Economics and Management is primarily open to graduates from business administration, economics, or mathematics, but also to those with degrees in related fields, such as engineering, operations research, or statistics. The cultural diversity of BiGSEM's students and their know-how in different fields assure rewarding synergy effects not only for graduate students, but also for faculty members. An admissions committee, selected by the board of directors, reviews applications of prospective students and decides on their admission. The total number of graduate students admitted to BiGSEM is restricted to a small number to ensure individual guidance and supervision.

The Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management welcomes applications from exceptional and highly motivated graduates with a degree in

  • Business Administration
  • Economics
  • Mathematics

or related fields, such as

  • Engineering
  • Operations Research
  • Statistics
  • etc.

The formal prerequisite for admission as a doctoral student is a Master's degree or equivalent (e.g. a German Diplom) conferred by a University after four years of study and including a written thesis. The degree need not be completed at the time of application. Furthermore, a sound knowledge of modern mathematical techniques is indispensable for successful participation.

Currently  BiGSEM cannot offer full scholarships to doctoral students. However BiGSEM is open to accept doctoral students who do not need financial assistance from BiGSEM and have the agreement of a BiGSEM faculty member to supervise them. Hence, if you are interested to join BiGSEM, please check the faculty list under: http://www.bigsem.de/members/faculty/ for faculty members working in your areas of interest and contact a potential supervisor directly. Once you have the agreement of a potential BiGSEM Supervisor, please send an application letter, mentioning your supervisor, and a CV including transcripts from your previous studies to bigsem-coordination@uni-bielefeld.de.

As for financial support, you can find information for several funding opportunities under http://www.bigsem.de/Funding/Doctoral_Fellowships/ .

Please note that the University currently charges no tuition fees for doctoral work. However, an enrollment fee of about 292,10 € is due every semester and includes a ticket for unlimited public transport in the area. Also, health insurance is mandatory in most cases.
