Scholarships
Students who successfully applied at BIGSEM have several options to finance their Phd studies. One option is to apply for a scholarship. The Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management offers each year a limited number of full scholarships. Furthermore, there are a number of third party scholarships a Phd student can apply for.
BIGSEM scholarships
BiGSEM offers different kinds of scholarships. All scholarships are usually awarded for the duration of three years. Applications for all scholarships run simultaneously to the applications for the acceptance at BIGSEM, see
http://www.bigsem.de/application.html.
Within the number of scholarships, there are two GSSP scholarships of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), available exclusively to foreign students. Notice that due to the large number of applicants the selection process for these scholarships is very competitive.
Third party scholarships
There exist a number of foundations which support outstanding qualified doctoral students through a scholarship.
The database of the Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides a good overview of potential funding organizations. In addition to that, there are several different foundations which are supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research that offer financial support for Phd students.
The DAAD database
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest funding organization in the world supporting the international exchange of students and scholars. On its website the DAAD offers an easy to handle and well-arranged database. This database provides the user with many current scholarships offered by different (and not only DAAD supported) organizations. Another advantage of the DAAD database is that the applicants can directly search for offers proposed for their country. The database can be found under

Funding Organizations
Listed below are foundations which offer highly motivated Phd students a scholarship. The list includes both foundations with a political background as well as with a religious one. All are supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The following fundamentals apply to all of these foundations:
Funding Period: The scholarships are awarded for two years. They may be extended twice for a maximum period of six months respectively.
Funding Amount: PhD students receive a monthly fellowship of € 1,050. Usually, they are also granted a monthly lump sum for research costs of € 100. Where relevant, family and childcare allowances may also be granted.
Target Group: The scholarships are open to graduated German students as well as to young graduate students from abroad who are admitted to a Phd program at a German university.
Applications for these scholarships go through the respective organizations directly.
