Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility program in the field of higher education that aims to enhance the quality of European higher education and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with Third-Countries. In addition, it contributes to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of Higher education institutions in Third Countries by increasing mobility between the European Union and these countries.

EDE–EM: European Doctorate in Economics – Erasmus Mundus promotes research training in the field of economics, to foster the mobility of doctoral candidates in this field, and to strengthen scientific and teaching collaboration among the participating institutions and third-country universities. The EDE-EM program is research-oriented and aims to produce top-quality researchers, who will gain international experience working within leading European research units that have some of Europe’s best researchers in economics. Students are trained for positions in academia at the highest international levels, as well as for responsible positions in government, research organizations, and business enterprises. The first cohort of EDE-EM doctoral students will enter the program in fall 2011.

The consortium consists of seven partners: Universiteit van Amsterdam (Netherlands), Universität Bielefeld (Germany), Université catholique de Louvain, UCL (Belgium), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, EHESS (France), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (France, Coordinator) and Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia (Italy) which are benefiting from long experiences in European Doctoral programs.

International doctoral candidates are facing an integrated European program offering among many other advantages more added values in form of mandatory mobility of at least two semesters, joint supervision by partners, joint degrees, double degrees, language courses, multicultural education, a worldwide network for research and career opportunities, a working contract.
