EDE-EM in Bielefeld is carried out under the roof of BiGSEM. An overview of the EDE-EM study program is given below. It is expected that all doctoral students entering EDE-EM have passed in their previous studies courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics that correspond to the BiGSEM core courses in these areas. Students without such prior training have the possibility to take the corresponding BiGSEM core courses during their stay in Bielefeld.
Structure of the Program (Curriculum)
180 ECTS: three year doctoral program
D1 (First Year) = 60 ECTS - mandatory
Doctoral training 30 ECTS
- 4 doctoral courses should be selected from the BiGSEM Field Courses : 4 ECTS each (= 16 ECTS)
- Attendance at one Research Seminar: 2 ECTS
- Courses in local language, see PunktUm: 2 ECTS for each semester (=4 ECTS)
- Participation in the Summer School: 3 ECTS
- PhD Proposal: 5 ECTS (elaboration of the PhD proposal with the two advisors and an external member)
Research work 30 ECTS
- Elaboration of the dissertation: 30 ECTS (with a written first year progress report on the advancement of research)
D2 (Second Year) = 60 ECTS - mandatory and elective
Mandatory: 45 ECTS (at least) Doctoral training 8 ECTS
- Attendance at two Research Seminars: 2 ECTS each (= 4 ECTS)
- Courses in local language, see PunktUm: 2 ECTS for each semester (= 4 ECTS)
Research work (at least 37 ECTS)
- Participation in the EDE-EM jamboree: 4 ECTS
- Elaboration of the dissertation: 30 ECTS (with a written second year progress report on the advancement of research)
- At least one of the mandatory activities in D2-D3 listed below
Elective: 15 ECTS (at most) - see D2-D3 activities
D3 (Third Year) = 60 ECTS - mandatory and elective
Mandatory: 55 ECTS (at most) Doctoral training
- Attendance to two Economics Seminar: 2 ECTS each (= 4 ECTS)
- Courses in local language: 2 ECTS for each semester (= 4 ECTS)
Research work (at least 44 ECTS)
- Participation in the EDE-EM jamboree: 4 ECTS
- Research work to elaborate a dissertation: 30 ECTS (with the final version of the Dissertation)
- Pre-defense: 5 ECTS
- Final Defense: 6 ECTS
