General Information

In 2001, the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at Bielefeld University established in close cooperation with the Center for Mathematical Economics (IMW) the Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management (BiGSEM). It offers a structured, internationally oriented three-year doctoral program with a strong research orientation.

The program is designed for three years of study and involves mandatory coursework, participation in doctoral and research seminars as well as the preparation of a doctoral thesis. Students choose one of two profiles: Economics or Management. The curricula in Economics and Management are taught by first-class scholars and the school offers excellent working conditions for its doctoral students.

BiGSEM has a strong international orientation attracting researchers from all over the world and offering students various exchange programs and joint projects with renowned international partners. An important goal of the BiGSEM program is to expose doctoral students early to the frontiers of international research and to help them develop their own research agenda. This involves attendance of research seminars as well as regular presentation and discussion of own work. Participation at international conferences and exchange visits are encouraged and supported.

Research and teaching at BiGSEM are based on normative and descriptive theory approaches, empirical analyses and, as an important tool and essential formal language, quantitative methods. The knowledge and expertise acquired by graduate students at BiGSEM qualifies them for positions of major responsibility in the areas of science, society, and economics, as competent analysts and decision-makers for trend-setting developments. BiGSEM alumni have launched successful careers in academia as well as in various economic sectors, like banking, insurance or consulting.

The Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management is run by the Faculty of  Business Administration and Economics. The school's board of directors, managing the various affairs of the graduate school, is regularly elected by the official representatives of the department. A member of the board is appointed as chairman of the graduate school. The staff of the school's administration office assists the chairman with his various duties.

More information about BiGSEM can be found on this website or in our image brochure.
