Numerous research and teaching cooperations carried out under the roof of BiGSEM highlight the main features of the program: the research orientation, the interdisciplinarity and the international network.

At Bielefeld University BiGSEM is part of the graduate education within the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 'From Heterogeneities to Inequalities' (2011-2016), which is coordinated by the Faculty of Sociology. Furthermore, it builds an important part of the interdisciplinary 'Bielefeld Graduate School in Theoretical Sciences (BGTS)' founded in 2012, which is developed together with the Faculties of Mathematics and Physics.

In Europe, BiGSEM participates in several international doctoral programs, strongly structured ones as well as more loosely organized broader cooperations. BiGSEM is the coordinator of the 'European Doctorate in Economics – Erasmus Mundus (EDE-EM)' (2011-2018) funded by the European Commission. It is carried out jointly by seven distinguished European universities. Students participating in this program study at least one year at two different partner universities, and obtain a joint degree from these universities after completion of the program. Addionally, BiGSEM successfully raised funds in the DAAD program Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) with its program 'European Doctorate in Economics-PhD (EDE-PhD)' (2013-2018). This program supports international doctoral students with fellowships in strucutred doctoral programs. Third, in the joint PhD fast track program with Université Paris1 Panthéon-Sorbonne named 'Track in Quantitative Economics (TiQE)' (2013-2018) doctoral students are supported to study for one year at the partner university by the DFH-UFA.

Finally, BiGSEM is also a member of the Erasmus-Socrates Program  Quantitative Economics Doctorate (QED), a loose cooperation among nine international universities, where students meet once a year at a doctoral workshop to discuss their recent work.
