September 28: BiGSEM Student at the 2012 NSF/NBER/CEME conference in Mathematical Economics and General Equilibrium Theory

BiGSEM/EBIM-student Oliver Claas is presenting at the 2012 NSF/NBER/CEME conference in Mathematical Economics and General Equilibrium Theory at the Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. His research journey to the United States also includes short stops at The City University of New York (Prof. Dr. Dr. G. Vachadze) as well as Washington University in St. Louis and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (both Prof. C. Azariadis, Ph.D.).

September 27: OWL Workshop

The first OWL Workshop on "Markets, Games, and Design" was held at the University of Paderborn and Bielefeld University from September 12-16, 2012. The scope of the workshop was to discuss topics in Game Theory and Mechanism Design and the relation to Markets. For further details, please refer to the homepage of the workshop.

September 26: EBIM Exchange Student

Stéphane Gonzalez from Paris1 is visiting the BiGSEM as an exchange student of our EBIM program in the time from 10/09/2012 to 10/10/2012.


September 6: BiGSEM Members at the EEA-ESEM in Malaga

 Tim Hellmann, Linda Sass and Anna Zaharieva presented at the 66th European Meeting of the Econometric Society in Malaga.

September 4: New BiGSEM Visiting Student

Tomas Balint is taking part in BiGSEM as a visiting student in the time from 01/10/2012 to 31/01/2013.


September 4: BiGSEM Student to Berkeley

Bigsem student Nikolai Brandt will visit Professor Felix Vardy at the UC
Berkeley this fall. During the stay they will work on a joint research
project in the field of information economics. They analyze whether banks
supply less information on bad investment projects than on good ones. The
stay abroad is financed by a BGTS mobility grant.

September 3: EBIM Workshop Call for Papers

The EBIM doctoral students are going to host their Seventh Doctoral Workshop on Economic Theory on November 26-27, 2012 at Bielefeld University. This international workshop is designed to provide Ph.D. students in theoretical economics with an opportunity to present their research and to discuss new developments in their fields.

July 24: Take a look at BiGSEM

Female Master student of Mathematical Economics at Bielefeld University Dorota Mrugala took the opportunity to take a look at the work of doctoral students of the BiGSEM during the Summer Meeting of the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

"The EBIM-EDEEM jamboree was a great opportunity to meet the PhD students from Paris and Bielefeld, and find out details about BiGSEM. Diverse topics of the presentations enclosed subjects that were interesting also for me. After the graduation ceremony I had the possibility to speak with important members of the program. The participants of the excursion were friendly and solicitous, so I spend a really good time in Paris "

July 17: Review Summer Meeting

18 BiGSEM members participated in the Summer Meeting 2012 of the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The Summer Meeting included the Summer Workshop in Economic Theory - SWET, the EBIM-EDEEM-PARIS1 Jamboree and the Graduation Ceremony of the QEM Masters Program. With more than 35 talks the meeting covered a broad variety of points of economic interest and was perceived as a great success regarding research as well as in the international cooperation between the participating universities by both senior researchers and doctoral students. Following this experience we are very much looking forward to hosting the next EBIM Workshop in Bielefeld at the end of this year.

July 16: Upcoming Minicourse: Irreversible Investment under Uncertainty

Jacco Thijssen will give a BiGSEM Minicourse on Irreversible Decision Making under Uncertainty in September. The exact date will be announced shortly. A short bio and a syllabus are already available.

This years EBIM/EDEEM-jamboree is taking place in Paris from July 11 - 13 within the Summer Meeting 2012. For more information including the program please click here.

June 14: BiGSEM Members at the 12th Viennese Workshop on Optimal Control, Dynamic Games and Nonlinear Dynamics

Following the tradition of the preceding meetings in this series, the workshop aimed at bringing together researchers in optimal control, dynamic games and nonlinear dynamical systems, as well as in economics, management, environment, population dynamics and social sciences.

The topics of the workshop included, but were not limited to, the theory and numerical methods of optimal control, differential games, bifurcation theory, and a broad spectrum of applications involving dynamic economic models (including heterogeneous/distributed ones), dynamic models in population and health economics, economic geography, demography, epidemiology, social sciences, etc.

June 4: BiGSEM Members at Exeter

Several EBIM members from Bielefeld and Paris met at the 2012 European Workshop on General Equilibrium Theory at the University of Exeter. The large number of participants from both partners highlights the mutual research interests that lead to several cooperations on the Ph.D. and master level.

BiGSEM Workshop

The 12th BiGSEM Doctoral Workshop on Economic Theory took place at Bielefeld University earlier this week. The annual event is entirely organized by doctoral students for doctoral students. Out of a pool of applications, fourteen speakers where invited to talk about their research in various fields of theoretical economics. All of these talks took place in the plenary hall of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research amidst the green of the Teutoburg Forest. Afterwards, everybody returned home with new ideas and concepts.Pictures

Sevak Alaverdyan has been invited to the 6th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences

The Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings has selected Sevak Alaverdyan to participate in the 6th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences to be held from 22 - 26 August 2017 in Lindau, Germany. Up to 20 Nobel Laureates and approximately 400 highly-talented young economists  from all over the world will participate in this meeting. Sevak Alaverdyan was selected among 1000 nominated students. Congratulations!

Benoit Decerf has a forthcoming publication in The Journal of Public Economics

The EDEEM graduate Benoit Decerf has a forthcoming publication in The Journal of Public Economics "Why not consider that being absolutely poor is worse than being only relatively poor?", which is a part of his PhD dissertation.

Gregor Böhl is awarded the "SCE 2017 Graduate Student Paper Contest"

The EDEEM student Gregor Böhl has been awarded the "Graduate Student Paper Contest 2017" of the Society for Computational Economics (SCE). The awards have been presented during the international conference "Computing in Economics and Finance" in New York City on Friday, June 30.

We are very happy to congratulate Gregor Böhl who is awarded the "Graduate Student Paper Contest 2017" for his paper "Monetary Policy and Speculative Stock Markets".

New Position at Goethe University Frankfurt
